5 Ways to Declutter Your Bathroom


Want to declutter your bathroom? Here are five easy ways you can minimize and organize a beautiful space your whole family will love.

It’s really easy for bathrooms to get cluttered with stuff. They’re the smallest rooms in the home, yet used by every member of the family multiple times a day. It’s not only a spot to go to the toilet and take a bath or shower, it’s also storage space for toilet paper, toothbrushes, skin care, body care… and often where beauty care products live out their final days. I call it the beauty product graveyard because all the samples from the department store end up here along with old makeup and medications.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your bathroom, it’s time to take it back and create a space where you and your family can do their business and freshen up in a peaceful and clutter-free space.

Ever wonder why the morning and bedtime routine seems hurried and frazzled? I’m willing to bet it’s related to the chaos that’s happening in the bathrooms. If the space you or your kids are getting ready in feel chaotic, then the morning and bedtime routine will be chaotic.

So let’s talk about 5 easy ways you can declutter your bathroom to minimize the clutter and create a space that’s peaceful and relaxed.

5 Ways to Declutter Your Bathroom

Remember that your bathroom is a space to get ready, clean up, and do your bathroom business. It’s not storage space. Keep only the things you need and minimize the rest.

1. Take everything out. 

It’s so much easier to decide what to keep instead of trying to decide what to purge. So take everything out of the medicine cabinet, under the sinks, and the countertops. Go through expired, old, unused for 6+ months, or broken products (think expired medications, old makeup, half-used body lotion that you can’t remember the last time you used it, beauty care samples, etc.) and purge them. Don’t save it for someday. If you’re not using it now or have used it in the last 6 months, you likely wont use it at all.

Ask yourself these questions for each item you consider keeping:

  • Do I use this?
  • Do I like this?
  • Do I need this? (not someday… now)

And remember… ditch those free beauty care samples. If you really needed them, you would have used them already.

2. Minimize your counters. 

After you decide to keep what you love and what you use, put the items that you use everyday within easy reach. Keep your counters clear with just your toothbrushes, toothpaste and hand soap. If storage is tight, you can use a cute storage container to hold a few other items. But resist using your bathroom counter as storage space.

3. Eliminate duplicates. 

Purge duplicates like extra hair dryers, brushes (keep a couple of different styles), thermometers, loofahs, body scrubbers, etc. As you get new items, replace them for old items so you can prevent clutter build up… like that new curling iron. Be mindful of extra shampoos, conditioners, bar soaps, body lotions and other consumable skin care products. If you haven’t used them in the last 6 months, let them go.

4. Add beautiful details. 

Fall in love with your bathroom space by adding in beautiful details like colorful towels, matching wicker baskets, and open shelves. Put the items you use regularly in pretty containers – like makeup brushes and cotton balls in Mason jars – to add to the bathroom decor. When you create a beautiful space, you’ll work harder at keeping it clutter free.

As you put items back in their place, organize it well. Turn the labels so they face out and easy to read. Fold towels and arrange them neatly. Make DIY Lavender Bath Salts and place them in a glass storage jar to display.

5. Create a routine.

The key to preventing clutter from happening is developing a routine. A neatly organized bathroom will make getting ready for the day a breeze and it will help to get your day off to a great start. So create a routine to hang the towels up, place items back where they belong, and tidy up the counters.
